On November 28th, the Northwest’s premier drive through holiday light show will close the track to vehicles to host families, friends, and some with their canine pets as they walk the course while supporting the Pongo Fund. This has become one of the most popular nights of the entire season for the Winter Wonderland.

This is a night you can’t miss! Dogs on a leash are welcome! But don’t forget…this special night is only once a year, Monday, November 28, supporting the Pongo Fund Pet Food Bank that supplies dog food to families that can’t afford to feed their dogs. (Walkers only, no cars or bikes allowed)

4:30     K9 Nose Work demonstration by Joyce Biethan, CNWI [Certified Nose Work Instructor]. K9 Nose Work is a new dog sport fashioned after the work of professional scent detection dogs. 4:45     Canine Freestyle demonstration by Carrol Haines.   Canine Freestyle is a choreographed performance, organized with music, illustrating the training and joyful relationship of a dog and handler team. 5:15     Fastest Retriever demonstration by Adrienne Hardin, Dog Trainer.  Sled dogs run on average 20 miles per hour and greyhounds can reach speeds of 45 mph. Cannon Beach, Ore. — The Surfsand Resort welcomes friendly canine competition with its 14th Annual Dog Show on the Beach, held Saturday, October 15th, on the resort’s seaside backyard.  Pooches from around the Northwest and beyond will compete for top honors in various categories including Oldest Looking Dog, Best Frisbee Catch, Cutest Puppy, Best Bark and Owner Look-alike. Join the Surfsand Resort for this light-hearted dog show as they raise money for the Clatsop County Animal Shelter.  Over the last 13 years, the Annual Dog Show on the Beach raised more than $13,000 to support the operations of the shelter.

This annual event is a "for fun" dog show, this year the show will benefit the Lincoln County Animal Shelter and DoveLewis Emergency Animal Hospital.  The show is open to all friendly dogs of all ages, sizes and breeds.  Registration starts at 11 am and is $3 per dog per category,  $25 for unlimited categories.

The NW Challenge is an adventure sports series and recreational sports expo
that covers the western half of the United States. Willamalane Center for Sports
& Recreation host the second stop of the 2011 Indoor series This Indoor expo
includes vendors, exhibitions and outdoor pursuits seminars and our X-Treme
AirDog Championship series competition. The vendors, attendees and competitors
create a passionate atmosphere that is like one big 3 day outdoor block
party for outdoor enthusiasts! The NW Challenge will feature the diverse recreational
opportunities and business’s of the mid willamette Valley of Oregon with
local and regional vendors,educational seminars and exhibitions of this recreational
rich region for a 3 day event. The indoor expo that is high energy family
fun with an ESPN look regularly experience standing room only crowds during
its X-Trem AirDogs competitions where local first timers can also compete!
Rock Out in the “Dog Pound” Preliminary competition starts on Friday and

“Give It A Try” (TM) For First Time Competitors
The NW Challenge has a new program called “Give It A Try” for new and local
dogs and their owners who would like to try dock jumping for the first time. We
have two pools! A new pool just for amateur dogs! It’s easy to get started:
Adults $20, you and your dog can have 2 one-hour blocks of practice jumps plus
instruction from our pro staff! Kids aged 15 & under only pay $15! Local amateur
dogs can also try out their new skills in one of our 4 jumping division for
prizes during the 3 day competition, maybe your team will be the new TV Superstar!

K9 Nose Work® (Scent Work) is a new dog sport modeled after the training of professional detection dogs. It allows your dog to use the natural desire to hunt and the unique ability to detect scent to determine where the source of the scent is. In training, dogs learn to find one of three scents just about anywhere you hide it. Competitions include searches in four elements: interior, exterior, containers and vehicles. Any dog of any age can do K9 Nose Work®. 

The family pet can be kept busy and happy doing K9 Nose Work® and the whole family can participate in training the dog. Dogs love to problem solve and we provide a great safe place for them to mentally and physically work, while doing what comes natural to them – using their nose. 

The training encourages shy dogs be more comfortable with their environment and teaches unfocused dogs to remain on task doing their scenting job. It gives dog reactive dogs another focus while working individually where reactivity is not an issue. K9 Nose Work® is also great for dogs convalescing from medical issues and dogs with hearing or sight impairments. This training also enhances the sharpness of dogs competing in Agility, Obedience, Herding, etc. Nose Work is fun to watch, fun to participate in and really fun for the dogs! It quickly becomes their favorite thing to do. 

The first sanctioned competition in our area is coming up on March 19 and 20th at Harmony Elementary School in Vancouver, Washington. We expect a great attendance and variety of dogs with their handlers from all over the Northwest including Alaska. Spectators are welcomed and allowed to view all the elements of the trial with the exception of the Interior Search. 

Shelley Smith, founder of K-9 Enterprises, LLC, is proud to be host the upcoming officially sanctioned NACSW K9 Nose Work® – NW1 Trial. Shelley, Certified Nose Work Instructor (CNWI) with the National Association of Canine Scent Work™ (NACSW), teaches all levels of classes here in the Portland area. When the NACSW was developed, Shelley began her training and was in one of the first Nose Work classes in Long Beach, California, studying with Ron Gaunt, Master Trainer and Founder of the NACSW™, as well as, founders Amy Herot and Jill Marie-O’Brian. In 2008, Shelley moved to Oregon and brought Nose Work to our area. Her expertise and enthusiasm add to the fun of taking classes with her. She is able to read the dogs very well thus enabling the handler and dog to reach their fullest potential.

Most of us have at some point imagined a world where we are all alone. As if in a movie, you look out as far as you can see and all is still. It is a life without movement and void of human connection. You can long for a friendly face or a kind voice but no one shows.  Aside from your own words, all you hear is silence. You are alone, scared and hungry. Then it hits you, without a food source, where will you turn? This

is the life for a homebound individual. Some are housebound due to age. Others they are sidelined due to disability. The common factor is that a life without transportation means little to no access to healthy food. For these individuals, the need never changes. These are the homes that are so greatly affected by Meals on Wheels. These are the lives that rely on Milwaukie Center just to meet their fundamental daily needs.

Milwaukie Center is a local community center that provides over 65,000 meals each year to homebound citizens. For those individuals, the program’s meals are often the only fresh, healthy food they have access to. "The Center's nutrition program is only partially covered by government funding," explained Joan Young, Center Director. "The remainder, which accounts for more than 50% is provided by local business sponsorships, events and individual donations. Without those fundraising dollars, we simply could not afford to keep food on the tables of the households we serve. Many would go hungry."

March is the time of year that Milwaukie Center staff and volunteers claim the program is “for the dogs" or more specifically, the mutts. On March 5, 2011, the Milwaukie Center, Clackamas FIDO and North Clackamas Parks District are hosting the 5th Annual March for Mutts Expo. The wildly popular event will take place at North Clackamas Park from nine am to noon. This event, the only one of its kind in Clackamas County, brings together local pet supply vendors and adoption agencies with over 700 dog lovers and their four-legged best friends. Attendees will participate in a fun-filled morning complete with canine focused events and services. All proceeds from the event go directly to Milwaukie Center's Meals on Wheels program.
