Question by rodrick p: Is it ok to feed my dog can food all the time?
So I have a 10 year old shih tzu and he has lost his front teeth. I generally feed him dry food and he has a tough time with it. A few days ago I bought him can food “chicken soup for teh dog’s soul” and he loved it. I tried to give him dry food yesterday but he wouldn’t touch it. I gace him another can of food and he gobbled it all up. Is it ok just to feed him can food all the time. I’d appreciate any advice on this matter

Sure, chicken soup for the dog lovers soul is good stuff and you’re dog is always the best judge. Just regulate the food to ensure he doesn’t get overweight, but that’s perfectly fine.
Another suggestion, you could also try mixing with a little dry food, Chicken soup for the dog lovers soul, many times you can buy samples so you’re not wasting your money is it doesn’t work.
Its alright if you dont do it every single day.Like i mean 29 days out of 31.Wet food can rot the dogs teeth.
Try changing the dry dog food brand.Just make it high quility.
If your not willing to do the search feed your dogs wet food and brush his teeth every other day.
No, it is not good for there teeth. Try mixing the wet with the dry, or there is a type of dog food that you add a little water to and it makes almost like a gravy. Might want to try that, that’s what we had to do with my dog.
Make sure it is healthy, though. A lot of canned pet foods can be high in calories and unhealthy fats and cholesterol. You can also try wetting down his dry food and making it mushy, if you ever wanted to switch back to it.

yeah try mixing both foods, i have a cat and sometimes she wouldn’t touch her dry food….. just mix both foods. dry and wet. some times they eat both sometimes they don’t it’s okay but you need to disaplin your dog when it comes to feeding. good luck….. trust me it WILL work out…
As I am sure you are aware, canned food is soft and does not offer any chewing exercise to help clean your dog’s teeth. You may want to have your vet take a look at his mouth, to rule out gum disease/tooth disease, and if he is able to chew any hard food whatsoever, to help with the cleaning of the teeth.
Now every dog in town is going to want to be your shih tzu.
its ok but if you ask a vet (like I did) they will tell you to give him more dry food, because the dry food is supposedly healthier and he won’t have as much bad breath too..its really up to you and what the dog wants as well. You can try mixing the can food with the dry food and see if he eats it that way.
If you own a toy breed puppy, it is imperative that they eat on a regular basis. If you have a really small toy breed puppy that refuses to eat, your puppy can start to become hypoglycemic, a very serious and often fatal condition if not treated correctly. So if you have a little teeny tiny puppy that won’t eat anything else except canned dog food, then feed them canned food. You can always change your puppies diet as they grow older and have less of a danger with bouts of hypoglycemia.
contact your vet….good luck!
