Question by Baleon: I can manage my dogs weight. That being said would it be beneficial to feed my adult dog puppy food?
I’ve looked up the question “can you feed an adult dog puppy food” and all the answers are from bandwagoners saying “It’ll make you dog fat”. Well since I’m not blind and I pay attention to my dog, I think I can watch her weight. That being said, would the extra nutrients and Omega-3′s in puppy food be beneficial for an adult dog to maintain her health? I mean every living thing needs vitamins, there doesn’t seem to be a reason to stop feeding my dog nutritious food just because she grows up.
Please don’t mention her getting fat at all because as I said twice, I watch her weight.

Feed her good quality adult food, then give her canine supplements/nutrients in addition. You are in control then. But if you get a really good food, you shouldn’t have to do this.

Ever hear the saying “too much of a good thing”. More is not always better. Even with nutrients and Omega 3s. I know in humans that there can be problems when there isn’t a balance of omega 3s and 6s. I don’t know about it in dogs.
And the only way to maintain her weight is to feed her less of the richer food or exercise her much more.
If she is a highly active dog, then fine, she may use the extra calories, fat and nutrients.
But if not, I don’t understand why you would feed her less of one type of food, just to be able to feed it. Plus, less food = less of all those nutrients.
Not to mention that different stages need different types of nutrients. The puppy food may be lacking in nutrients and adult female requires.
Some vitamins are water soluable, meaning if she takes in to much, it will just be released in urine. Others are not and build up. Trying to process things like extra protein can put strain on the liver, kidneys and other organs.
Puppy food is not more healthy, it is specially formulated to supply growing puppies with what they need. Fully grown adults don’t need the same.
There is no such thing as “adult puppy food”. There are benifits to feeding either adult or puppy food. The main diffrence between the two is the nutrients in the formulas. The puppy food has more fat because a puppy is growing and needs that. When they’re adults it changes to less fat, and has other things in it. Its not LESS healthy for your dog.
If you feel like your dog would benifit from continued puppy food, go for it. but if you see her starting to gain wieght, id say just swap to adult, and see how she handles it.
Please do not feed your adult dog puppy food. The extra nutrients and protein are not required, choose a food that’s right for your dog, large breed adult, small breed adult whatever.
A pregnant b*tch in the last three weeks of pregnancy would benefit from a puppy diet (upto weaning) a dog recovering from illness would benefit from puppy food.
I reckon you already know this!
Usually puppy dog food will cause a gi upset in adult dogs. Its just too much for an adult dogs system. My vet told me to start feeding my seven mo. old adult food when he was having soft stool because it may be too rich for his system. She was right. There is a reason why they make puppy, adult, and senior foods. Each food is specifically geared to meet the nutritional needs of the dog during that stage of life. If you want to feed your dog the optimum dog food I suggest using Blue Buffalo or Taste of The Wild. These are brands are all stage dog foods. This meas that they are geared toward dogs during all stages of life, and are high quality. They have no grains, wheats, and are excellent quality.
I feed all my dogs Taste of the wild Wetlands formula, and they are all healthy and happy.
No, this probably isn’t a good idea.
Dog food companies do extensive research to make sure a dog’s needs are met in the food they manufacture. Puppy food has more protein in it that could be potentially harmful to your dog’s kidneys. I think getting a high-quality adult food and a good multi-vitamin would be the safest and healthiest option. Of course, talk to your veterinarian if you have other concerns or want to be absolutely sure your dog is getting a balanced diet.
what they say is true, puppy food has a higher protein, vitamins and fat content, made just for puppies. seeing when you get a puppy most are not weened right away and will eat solids and milk. this high content supplements for the loss of mothers milk and will ensure the puppy gains enough weight that its bones and body grows to where it needs to be. the puppy food will have her gain weight and it will make her gain it fast.
if not constantly busy she wont burn off that extra food consumed. its like us eating too many big macs. we can only consume so many before it catches up.
using this for a dog that is too skinny that wont gain any weight, but i wouldnt keep them on it.
Omega 3 is found in fish oil and yes it keeps their coat shiny and skin from flaking. you can find this in any drug store, you can break them open and add it to any dry food. it would be cheaper than buying puppy food just for this. plus you wouldnt have to worry about over feeding.
i have found Merrick’s is a good dog food for adults, you have to feed less but not worry about getting heavy on it. along with wellness and a few others
hope this helps
Wow I’m gonna guarantee that all of the people who answered your question are speaking from their noses stuck high in the air. If you can manage your dogs weight then puppy food will be fine. The ONLY difference between puppy and dog food is that high caloric count. Sometimes it doesn’t even have any more vitamins than adult foods. You can find adult food with Omegas in it, but if you have been feeding your adult dog puppy food and that’s what she likes, and she’s not over weight then go ahead. Haven’t these idiots ever heard of EXERCISE. It’s what you do with a dog when you love it. But obviously you have and that’s great. Most of these idiots just let their dogs sit around and get fat off of air. But puppy food is not poison to adult dogs. It will NOT slowly kill it. DOES BABY FOOD KILL HUMAN ADULTS?! No. Sorry most dog owners are on Y! Answers are idiots in disguise, but I think if you can manage your dogs weight, you can give him or her any food as long as it is complete in vitamins and protein.
