Question by Josh: Is a high protein food bad for my puppy?
So I have a 6 month old Maltese/shitzu mix and he has been throwing up all day but I was told by someone that a high protein dog food is bad for small dogs? I have been feeding him “blue” brand dog food. “www.bluebuff.com”. Is it bad for them?
I forgot to add that he has a liver problem. I don’t know what but we took him to get neutered about a month and a half ago, and his liver enzymes were too high, so they gave us a month supply of pills for him to take one a day. Then last week we took him to get tested again and it was still too high. The level was 29.4, and they won’t do the procedure until it’s below 25. We have him scheduled for an ultrasound so start finding out what the problem might be.

If she’s been on the Blue Buffalo for awhile, it’s not likely that it’s the food.
My small dog found Blue Buffalo way too rich – as she does with most high protein foods. Blue Buffalo is a high quality food, but many small dogs simply can’t digest it well.
If the vomiting continues for another day, or if any other symptoms pop up, puppy should be brought to the vet ASAP.

YOU SHOULD BE FEEDING THE PUP, PUPPY FOOD. sorry for the caps, my bad.
Any puppy food brand is what you should be feed your pup. If in doubt, talk to the person in the pet food aisle at the pet store. They always help me out correctly where i go (Pet Food Express).
Its not horrible, you could be feeding him Beneful or Pedigree. you really only want to feed a dog a high protein diet if its under weight. Blue is just fine for a puppy. its on the higher end of the “grocery” brand dog foods. just make sure he is getting the puppy formula.
Just in my opinion, if this was my dog he would be on solid gold, merrick, prairie. all good formulas that i recommend.
Also i would get him to the vet to check if he has any food allergies. this way you can know exactly what you can and cannot feed the dog.
think about it, what do wolves eat? meat. some people feed their dogs only raw meat. if its dog food, then you’re fine.
if you just changed her food, that might explain it, but it is probably another cause
Amanda should do her research better…Blue Buffalo IS a high quality dog food that you CANNOT buy in a grocery store. As long as your giving your puppy the puppy formula and he has been on it for awhile, its probably not the food, however, keep an eye on him…in the meantime offer a bland meal of plain rice and you can add some boiled chicken as well…that should help to settle his tummy.
I got my dog when he was about one so I don’t have personal experience with puppies…but I do know that puppies throwing up for more than a day could be a sign of something serious that needs to get checked out by a vet. In general when dogs have issues with digesting food their stool will be soft. The fact that your dog is throwing up concerns me. Especially if he has been eating it for a while then all of a sudden starts throwing up, then obviously something else is wrong. Is there a chance he may have ingested something else? It is very very important to properly hydrate puppies when they are sick. You should probably call your vet’s office. Often times, they will ask you questions over the phone and give you advice. You may not even need to take him in if it’s something they think you can handle. Good luck.
Hey I’m a true dog person. High protein food is bad for your puppy. You don’t want it to be more than 10%. I feed my dogs “Wellness Lite”. I recommend that you switch your puppy to that. Just got a new Boxer puppy myself. Glad I could help.
High protein dog food will not harm your puppy. The only groups high protein food is inappropriate for is large breed puppies and dogs with kidney disease. All other dogs can be fed high protein food.
That being said regular Blue Buffalo (which is a high quality food) is not considered high protein. Their Wilderness variety is high protein. Dogs need at least 18% protein in their diet, more if they are puppies. Your food is adequate.
I have a 15 pound dog that has almost been exclusivly feed high protein diets (EVO, Orijen) and has never had a problem. All foods have the ability to cause stomach upset in some dogs. Not all dogs will tolerate a particular food.
If your dog has been on this food for a while, it is not the food. If your dog is not drinking he needs to be taken to the vet to treat dehydration. There are many causes of vomiting in dogs and if he continues to vomit your vet is the best bet.
