San Diego (Vocus) September 18, 2008

In the same year instant replay was introduced to Major League Baseball to review disputed home runs, a video replay has unveiled the tiny – but rightful – second- and third-place winners in the Aug. 31 race for America’s fastest Chihuahua.

After careful review, PETCO today announced that 2007 defending champion, Maddy of New York, and Cricket, of Rowlett, Texas, finished second and third in the hotly contested Fourth Annual PETCO Unleashed National Chihuahua Races (www.petco.com/petcounleashed).

“After reviewing new video from the finish line that was brought to our attention, it turns out these tiny racers are even faster than we thought – and clearly faster than the blinks of our judges’ eyes,” said Greg Seremetis, PETCO’s director of marketing. “We made a mistake and are now correcting it by recognizing the rightful second- and third-place racers. Our Chihuahua races will always be about having fun, but as the event grows in popularity, we also want to ensure we’re doing things right and recognizing the speediest dogs along the way.”

The video replay shows that Tiger of Bakersfield, Calif., is still the rightful 2008 champion and maintains his first-place title. However, it was Maddy and Cricket, who truly came in second and third place – rather than Piccolo from The Woodlands, Texas, and Pancho Villa from Lopez Island, Wash., as the judges originally called. Mia, from Elizabeth, Colo., remains the official fourth-place finalist.

Maddy and Cricket will each receive their second- and third-place prizes – a year’s supply of Royal Canin dog food for each, and $ 150 and $ 100 PETCO gift cards, respectively. Piccolo and Pancho Villa will retain their prizes as the original and honorary finalists.

“As with any annual event, we learn something new every year,” said Seremetis. “It’s clear that people love the Chihuahua races – and they’re taking the competition more seriously each time around. Next year, we’ll be sure to refer to the instant replay before we announce our winners.”

PETCO’s fourth annual National Chihuahua Races took place over Labor Day weekend between innings of the San Diego Padres vs. Colorado Rockies baseball game at PETCO Park.

Video footage of the national finals and pint-sized profiles of all regional champions is available at www.petco.com/petcounleashed.

How to Connect Your Labradors Home Behavior with its Hunting Skills

Despite the Labradors abilities at hunting and tracking, it has also been proven that they make excellent guide dogs for the handicapped and the blind.  Combine this with their kind and obedient temperament and you have a dog that is an obedient companion and helper. What makes them equally unique is the fact that have adapted to these multiple roles so effectively.  There talents at fetching, hunting, and swimming are nothing short of remarkable.  Suffice it to say, they are appropriate viewed as a universal pet.

Labrador Retrievers are the consummate result of generations of breeders who used a very stringent set of criteria for developing the breed.  When the breed came into being, it was done so by combining several key factors.  Their breeders were desirous of having an animal that was motivated enough to jump into the iciest of waters, swim against swift currents, and return to shore with the heaviest waterfowl possible in their jaws.

At the same time, those jaws are gentle enough so that the quarry comes to shore unharmed.  They are a genetically engineered composition of determination, endurance, and strength combined with a mental toughness that is capable of withstanding the pain and rigors or their tasks.  Additionally, they are capable of keeping that prey in the grips of their jaws whether it is still alive or not without damaging the meat.

The Labradors skills combined with the stresses they endure while they are hunting and retrieving are the key factors behind the sharpness and strength of their psyche as well.  Considering these levels of determination and motivation that the Lab is capable of, it becomes even more apparent as to how and why this particular breed is so adept at finding the fallen prey when its location is so obscure.  It also explains how and why the dog can find that prey despite the difficulty of the terrain it has to maneuver through, recover that prey, and return it to its hunter/master unscathed.

Is it possible for humans to learn from the Labradors skilled behavior? In a word yes, due most likely to the determination and motivational factors of the dogs personality while out in the field hunting and tracking.  This is also an excellent way to understand why the Labrador behaves in the home the way it does.  Whether or not you have gotten a Labrador Retriever for hunting and tracking purposes is not the issue.  The critical issue is that you understand how very capable they are of performing these tasks in order to effectively train the dog to be an obedient companion.

Due to their superior coordination and intelligence, Labradors make their decisions and react according to their natural hunting abilities, hence it is difficult to train them for ordinary household details.  However, put them in either the hunting or service arenas and their skills are unparalleled.  Therefore, your responsibility as the owner should come from a better sense of the Labradors physical skills and their psyche.

For answering age old questions like “Who am I,” “Why am I here,” “How can I live a meaningful life,” Asma has found the answers in Buddhism, but a Buddhism he has shaped to fit rather than one-size fits all. He dispenses with the “New Age mush” and takes “the California out of Buddhism” to form a Buddhism that is accessible and inclusive for people, people who may be put off by organized religion or dogma stacked on dogma. He builds the case for an authentic modality in his own iconoclastic, irreverent, and hardheaded way.

“I’m not a monk, or even a member of a temple. I have studied Buddhism with some amazing scholars and practitioners, and I’ve taught Buddhism for many years in the States and Asia—but I think gurus are screwballs. I probably drink too much, and I’m not in the least bit interested in sexual abstinence. I like the White Sox, and I eat meat. If a guy like me can be a Buddhist…trust me, there’s room for you.” ~Stephen T. Asma

From the Introduction:

Brush strokes are necessarily broad, but hopefully accurate. Exceptions to my generalizations will be inevitable, and the absence of someone’s favorite Buddhist story, thinker, or text will be maddening to the initiated. But no matter the flaws of such a format, such a book will hopefully do two things well: first, introduce unfamiliar ideas to the novice, and second, remind and inspire the old hand. The third possible function of such a personal book is to show how someone applies, or puts into practice, the theoretical teachings.

This book is not going to stand behind you with sword at the ready. I haven’t done that to myself, so I’m certainly not going to get preachy with you. I’m a fan of the gentle but persistent application of dharma—the Middle Way between the zealot and slacker approaches.

Chapters include:

A Newly Elevated Status for My Private Little Soul: Discovering Transcendentalism
Climbing the “Everest” of Cravings: Buddhism and Eros
A Natural Exercise in No-Self: Buddhism and Parenting
Science Is Mysticism—without the Magical Thinking
Jack Kerouac, Haiku, Charlie Parker, and the Artistic Quest
    Work: Wealth and Worth
    Dharma and the Global Village

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Stephen T. Asma, Ph.D., is professor of philosophy and interdisciplinary humanities at Columbia College in Chicago. He is the author of Buddha for Beginners. He is also a jazz musician and a popular guest on Chicago area NPR programs.

Pups appear to have a mentality of their own and while they are certainly trainable, some seem as if they are purposely doing everything they can to drive their owner totally loony with their actions. Tip #1 – Reward, reward, reward. Too many pet owners focus only onpenalizing their dog in terms of dog behavior training. The genuine step to having your pup or canine to accomplish what you would like is always to constantly encourage his conduct when he is doing it. This will be significant for instance while in toilet training. Merely chastising him when he messes in the house is not enough. When you are getting him outdoors to deal with business, make sure to instantly pet him and provide him constructive treatment when he’s done. By doing this he connected going bathroom in the absolute right place together with master’s consent. Dogs need that consent at the very least, so you’ll want to employ that constantly while in dog behavior training.

Tip #2 – Take It Easy. It truly is a popular likelihood between new puppy owners to totally bombard their puppy with all the current stunts they desire them to conduct. It is something like enjoying with a brand new gadget – you like to move through each of the features and choices right away. For dog behavior training you need to slow yourself down and concentrate on one thing at a time. Teach him how to sit and practice this for at least two weeks before you introduce another command. Continue to practice the sitting while you do the next one, but let the next command sink in for a good two weeks before you move on to another. Keep in mind, dog behavior training can be quite a bit mind-boggling for the dogs and also the owners therefore attempting to achieve everything at the same time is simply gonna be too much for the dog as well as for you. Therefore lessen the pace and be patient, with the dog and with yourself.

Tip #3 – Have fun! Once dog behavior training becomes irritating or overwhelming, it’s time to step back a bit. Be patient with the dog and remind yourself of all the reasons you got him. Although it is not constantly entertaining and pleasant, dog behavior training really should not be disastrous for you or even the dog also. Therefore when you are disliking your pet or convinced that probably you have made a blunder, breathe deeply, after which take yourself and the dog out for a prolonged walk – and have a great time on the way!

Hamilton, NJ (PRWEB) September 10, 2006

Canine and Abled, Inc. will be appearing at Project Freedom’s 3rd Annual Abilities Fair in it’s hometown of Hamilton Township, NJ; (715 Kuser Road, Hamilton, NJ 08619)The fair will run from 11am to 7pm, and the Canine and Abled program is set to appear at noon.

Canine and Abled is an award-winning, service dog educational program that provides an incredible task demonstration incorporated into a wonderfully inspirational message.

Program founder Kimberly Carnevale, was a professional athlete when a horrible car accident left her with multiple, permanent injuries; the most devastating being a brain injury. Sometime later, she was diagnosed with MS. She was partnered with her first service dog, Dewey in 1999 and was astounded to find the lack of knowledge about medical assistance dogs, and laws that govern their use. “I found myself constantly explaining why I had my dog with me in public; and was forced to educate employees about service dog law. It got tiring having to do that every time I wanted to go out.” Carnevale realized that the common denominator in all access denials was lack of education. Armed with an arsenal of service dog information, as well as disability laws, Kimberly set out on a mission to abolish access denial by founding Canine and Abled, Inc. Her story is featured in her first book, “Canine and Abled, Taking The Dis Out of Disabled,” which is an in-depth look at Kimberly’s fall from her bid for the United States Equestrian Team, to her recovery as an accident survivor; and finally to her tragedy turned triumph in the creation of Canine and Abled. Kimberly is working on her second book (the first in a series), which is a fictional, pre-teen project featuring disability awareness and stars the Canine and Abled dogs throughout each story.

Today, Kimberly is partnered with Dawson; a lovely Collie. She is joined on stage with Dawson’s protege, Nadja, a stunning black, German Shepherd who is learning Dawson’s job; and Gracie, a Zuchon who demonstrates the abilities of small dogs as service dogs. The program has been integrated into schools, civic organizations, churches, girl/boy scouts, even birthday parties; and has gained accolades from audiences everywhere.

The Project Freedom Abilities Fair will include booths from companies displaying products/services for people with disabilities and their families, food, a live band, over 50 exhibitors and more. In addition to presenting, Kimberly and her staff will have a table set up with information and books available for signing; and the Canine and Abled dogs will be available for a meet and greet. Bring the entire family for a fun and educational time. For more information, log onto the Canine and Abled site: www.canineandabled.com
