One thing I adore about the studio is being able to shoot anytime of the day in any weather conditions. Even though I am inside, I still like my photos to look modern, playful and artistic. Buying backdrops for photography can be really expensive. In fact, I spent my morning painting a huge piece of canvas. Similar backdrops retail for $700! But my favorite way to create an artistic feel is to buy fabrics. Look for a pattern that is pleasing, not too busy and will compliment the color palette of your work.

In Portland I shop at Fabric Depot and Fabrics for Less (NE Broadway). My favorite fabric backdrops are made of material that doesn't wrinkle easily and are sized 1.5 yards and up. I sew a simple sleeve in the top for hanging. To store them, I keep them ironed and hung on pvc pipes. When I am shooting with a fabric backdrop, they go on a portable backdrop stand with a light metal rod. However, you could just as easily use a pvc pipe and rest the ends on two chairs. And by the way…the brown/white furry dog in these photos is going to appear on the 2012 DoveLewis calendar! With her sweet face and beautiful coloring, it was hard to choose what backgrounds to use.
