Greenhill Humane on a rescue mission
Theresa Iverson-Perkins, Greenhill Humane Society’s long-time animal intake manager, got a call she’s getting more frequently:  there were over 40 small dogs in a “high-kill” shelter in southern California that needed immediate transport to a safer locale where they stood a better chance of adoption.  Could Greenhill handle at least some of them?  Greenhill took in 11 of the little pooches over the weekend, with the remaining dogs were transported to shelters throughout Oregon & Washington state. Theresa, with assistance from Washington based- “Another Chance Rescue”  http://www.another-chance.com/, coordinated transport of the dogs from California to Oregon in a matter of days.  After a marathon weekend of vaccinations, spaying/neutering, micro-chipping, and general health exam by Greenhill staff Veterinarian, the dogs have all been given a clean bill of health and are eager and ready for adoption.

Living with a Great Dane
You don’t own the Great Dane as much as he or she owns you. Take Vegas for example. Who needs an alarm clock? She tells me when it’s time to get up. Of course it’s with a slapstick paw across the body or a wet tongue washcloth to the face. Oh, and there’s no snooze button on a Great Dane, in case you’re wondering. Typical of owning a dog, yes, then there’s the usual rush to get him or her outside for the morning ritual. But while some dogs are happy to meander about the yard, securing their territory, and sniffing every blade of grass while basking in the morning dew or sunshine, the Great Dane wants right back in – NOW. And they’re not subtle about telling you. Many a paw print on the sliding glass door tells the tale of a demanding Great Dane. In fact, those muddy paw prints cleverly disguise the scratches that can’t help but to have formed in the glass after several years of such behavior. …Read More…

Keep your pets safe/secure this July 4th
Tips to Help Ensure Your Pets Don’t Run Away Because Fireworks Can Scare Dogs (and Cats)

Portland, OR –  Independence Day is not a time of celebration for our pets. The fireworks that we humans find so thrilling can drive pets, especially dogs, into a state of utter panic. The explosions (even miles away), the high-pitched swoosh of rockets climbing into the sky, the flashes of light – these can all be overwhelming sensory assaults. If your pet is terrified of fireworks, you probably know the signs: He cowers, trembles in fear or hides and appears disoriented. Some dogs become so frightened they take drastic action. They can crash through a screen door, jump out of a window or leap a fence.

Every year, Portland animal shelters have their hands full dealing with lost dogs that bolted on July 4, cats that have gone missing and anxious owners looking for them. Sadly, some lost pets are never recovered. There are ways to make July 4 safer and less stressful for pets. Keep your pet inside as much as possible on July 4 (and for a few days before and after if your pet is extremely phobic about fireworks). If you find a stray animal, please keep them with you until your local animal shelter is open and ready to receive them…..Read More….
