Holiday Safety Tips

Greenhill offers holiday tips for pet owners

With all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season upon us, Greenhill Humane Society wants to send a friendly reminder to all pet owners regarding pet safety:

  • Pets as Gifts:  One of the main reasons animals are abandoned or brought to an animal shelter is because they are unwanted.  Don’t give a pet to someone without first having them acknowledge they want a pet and are financially and emotionally able to care for it.  Everyone should choose the the pet that is right for them.  Greenhill offers Adoption Gift Certificates in various increments, which make great stocking stuffers for that person who is searching for that perfect pet!  Contact the shelter at 541 689 1503 to purchase or for more information.    Read the rest of this entry

Summer Heat Can Be Deadly For Your Dog

Greenhill Humane SocietySummer heat can be deadly for your pet

Greenhill reminds pet owners to be mindful when the mercury rises

Summers in Oregon are a great time for you and your pet to be outside together.  However, the recent death of a young dog left unattended in a vehicle at a local shopping center is a startling reminder for pet owners to leave pets at home when running errands and to take necessary precautions when the mercury rises.  Leaving your animal in a parked car, even for a short time, can easily cause heat stroke or brain damage.  On an 85 degree day, a car's interior temperature can climb to 120 degrees in 20 minutes, even with the windows slightly open.  Dogs are especially vulnerable to heat stress because they do not sweat in the way that humans do. Dogs release body heat by panting but when the ambient air is hotter that the dog’s body, panting is ineffective.

Greenhill sending S.O.S. for empty pet food bank

Food can be dropped off at Greenhill Shelter

Greenhill is asking for the community’s help in restocking their pet food bank this holiday season.  Due to a greater need than usual the past few months, our pet food bank has been completely depleted.  “Wemaintain a food bank for individuals in the community that are struggling and need help to feed and care for their animals,” says Rhonda Livesay, Greenhill’s Operations Manager who helps oversee the food bank at the shelter.  “We need dog and cat food, both wet and dry, to help our community members keep the pets they love.”  The food bank supply is generally not the same source Greenhill uses to feed it’s shelter animals.  The shelter receives bulk donations from pet food suppliers such as Hill’s, pet stores, and individuals.

For those that can help, folks are asked to drop off any dry or wet dog and cat food (all sizes or brands accepted) to the shelter, located at 88530 Greenhill Road (off west 11th) in Eugene.
