Governor Kitzhaber Proclaims May 1 – 7 “Be Kind to Animals Week” Across Oregon

Portland, OR – Be Kind to Animals Week (May 1 – 7) represents a wonderful tradition of celebrating and respecting animals. It is a time to reflect on the happiness and joy these companions bring to our lives. Oregonians already know how to be kind to their animals as Portland was named DogTown USA 2006 by Dog Fancy Magazine and was ranked in 2009 as a Top Ten Cat Friendly cities by CATalyst Council. This is based on the tough animal welfare laws enforced in Oregon, a clean environment for animals and humans, a high number of quality veterinarians to care for the animals of the community and quality humane organizations providing compassion for homeless animals.

“Since 1915 the first week of May has been set aside to draw attention to the need to be kind to animals – to learn responsible ways of caring for a pet, showing concern for those without a home, reducing pet overpopulation – all building a stronger human-animal bond. This spirit of Be Kind to Animals Week can and should be celebrated every day,” proclaims John Kitzhaber, Governor of the state of Oregon.

The Oregon Humane Society, a place where being kind to animals is a daily celebration, encourages you to show your compassion towards all animals this special week in May and beyond through these kind actions:

* Keep visible ID on your pet at all times
* Encouraging friends and family to spay/neuter their pets
* Spoil your pet with a new toy or treat
* Report animals abuse or neglect (call the OHS hotline at 503-285-7722, ext. 214, or online at http://www.oregonhumane.org/services/report_neglect_abuse.asp
* Volunteer at your local shelter (call the OHS volunteer office at 503-285-7722, ext. 204)

A Cat by Another Name

It was a fair Oregon morning for late September, with low clouds likely to burn off, and the air was crisp and refreshing. Fellow Certified Veterinary Technician and OHSTAR volunteer, Julie Ames met me at a Tigard address, where a young cat was reportedly stuck in a large tree out back. Upon arrival in the small backyard, we took stock of the situation. A black and white, spayed female cat the lady called “Bella” called to us at the top of her lungs from about 45 feet up in a large Douglas Fir tree. She said she didn’t know what the cat’s name was, but that she liked the Twilight series, so called her Bella, after the main character.

Keep Pets Safe/Secure this Fourth of July

Tips to Help Ensure Your Pets Don’t Run Away Because Fireworks Can Scare Dogs (and Cats)

Portland, OR –  Independence Day is not a time of celebration for our pets. The fireworks that we humans find so thrilling can drive pets, especially dogs, into a state of utter panic. The explosions (even miles away), the high-pitched swoosh of rockets climbing into the sky, the flashes of light – these can all be overwhelming sensory assaults. If your pet is terrified of fireworks, you probably know the signs: He cowers, trembles in fear or hides and appears disoriented. Some dogs become so frightened they take drastic action. They can crash through a screen door, jump out of a window or leap a fence. Read the rest of this entry
