I know lots of dogs don’t get to have the adventures I do, but I recently heard about a new service being offered for dogs who’s humans can’t take them on adventures. Fido and I are really lucky, our humans are able to take us on adventures almost everyday, but I know not all dogs are so lucky. In today’s hectic world most humans just can’t spend 2-3 hours twice a week playing and hiking with their best friend. I’m sure they would love to, but it just isn’t always possible.
Dog adventure services will pick up your dog take them out for hours of off leash fun and return them home, healthier and happier. The dogs get lots of exercise, enjoy doggie social contact and have a great time. When they come home they are much calmer, happier, and often better behaved. It’s amazing how a dogs personality will change when they get a chance to run and play with other dogs. Just ask my Mom, I’ve been know to shred a newspaper, or chew up the occasional slipper when I don’t have a chance to get out. Not that I’m ever really bad mind you, just energetic.
What to look for in an Adventure Service
A good dog adventure service will be concerned with the dogs safety, and group dog accordingly. For instance, Fido (Yorkie) and I (Chihuahua/Terrier) would not be grouped with Rotties, Great Danes, and Mastiffs. While I can handle myself with the big boys and love chasing them around the parks, Fido could accidently get stepped on, she’s just not too quick on her feet these days.
No matter how many safety precautions humans take, accidents do happen and the adventure service you choose should have group leaders certified in Animal First Aide and CPR.
Dog Adventures are not just a physical outing they are a social outing for dogs. Because of that there are rules and policies that must be followed. Some of the standard rules are:
- Healthy and current on vaccines.
- Follow commands to come, sit, stay, etc.
- Willing to accept commands from group leaders.
- Dogs must be non-aggressive to humans and other dogs.
If you love your dog, but just don’t have the this kind of time to devote to them, check out a Dog Adventure Service. Fido’s will soon be adding a directory category for this services. In the mean time here are a few places you may want to check out.
